One of my best friends growing up, as you know, was Caroline. Caroline always had the most interesting things in her purses. Sometimes she carried special handkerchiefs. Her father always carried a handkerchief neatly folded in his suit breast pocket instead of regular tissues like my dad carried. Caroline usually had a fun flavor of Bonnie Bell lip-gloss or Chap Stick that I didn't even know was out.
When we were kids, we would walk down the block to our neighborhood park and play all sorts of imagination games. Sometimes the park even turned into the Love Boat. I have a distinct memory one day of Caroline finding a four-leaf clover and carefully putting it in her purse. I also remember that one day she had a little tube of ant bite cream in case we needed it. Such simple items seemed like little treasures to me.
I remember thinking that Caroline was the equivalent of what I would describe as sophisticated today. I was not only intrigued by what might be in her purse but wanted to take notes on how to be more sophisticated myself. I would lay odds that today Caroline's purse would still be one of the most interesting purses to tour. |
